Hard to believe that could recoup its 55 million dollar cost but maybe that’s how the film biz works these days. I don’t know how these movie deals work but just days after its theatrical release it became available for streaming on Netflix. Total box office? According to IMDb, just $112,777. The film had a budget of $55 million and was put into a limited theatrical release in November of 2021. “Tick, tock…boom!” is further proof (as if we needed any) of Miranda’s genius as well as his understanding of the frequent battle artists wage between risking it all by staying true to who they are and playing it safe by “selling out.” Having said that, I can give an unadulterated recommendation to this semi-autographical adaptation of a play by Jonathan Larson because, although music plays a dominant role in the film, it’s really all about the creative process: the fleeting ecstasy of achievement when an idea is born, and the drawn-out agony of defeat when the creative juices just won’t flow on demand but your rent is still due. It sounded like a Bruce Willis “Die Hard” sequel, but instead it was the film directorial debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the virtuoso behind “Hamilton,” and the Rotten Tomatoes ratings were astounding (88% positive from critics, 96% from the general public).ĭespite my lifelong passion for music, I’m really not a big fan of the “musical” genre in film. We stumbled across the weirdly named “Tick, tick…boom!”. It was Saturday night and my partner Wendy and I were furiously jumping back and forth between Netflix and Rotten Tomatoes to find an engrossing film that wouldn’t insult our intelligence (not so easy these days).
